Police Coaching Case Study: Confidence Isn’t Enough

This post — Coaching Case Study: When Confidence Isn’t Enough — is about a common type of client I meet more often than you’d think: the candidate who believes they’re ready, but repeatedly resists the preparation process. On top of that, they're in denial as well.

Over the years, I’ve worked with a range of police and public safety candidates — from highly prepared to dangerously overconfident. I have noticed a common pattern with those who are not ready yet.

Whether you're applying with your OACP, for the OPP in Ontario, for the RCMP, on the West Coast using your ETHOS, for CBSA with your OTEE, or any other police service, please read this blog post to save years of time with your journey.

They show up without having done the work.
They want to argue the structure instead of meet it.
They believe life experience alone should be enough.
They think confidence can replace clarity.
They avoid self-reflection (sometimes proudly).

And yet — they still sign up for coaching. That tells me something.
Some part of them knows they’re not ready. Some part of them is reaching out for structure, even if they resist it once it arrives.
Often, it’s the subconscious part of them running the show — the part that’s unsure, afraid, or quietly sabotaging the process.

"I got in with Toronto Police Service and officially got my badge yesterday so I wanted to say thank you for all the help. I wish I would have got your help earlier instead of struggling for 3 years to get back into policing. I appreciate all the support." March 1, 2026

"I was able to make it through the Special Constable process with your interview program. I am planning to apply for Constable next." February 24, 2026.

"I passed the polygraph and next up is the background check. My psych for XXXX is scheduled for two weeks from now. I'm planning to revise what we coached on plus your teaching material. Thank you for all of your help so far." February 24, 2026

"Hello Gillian, Your program really helped me out in preparation of SIGMA test and understanding the psychological tests. I cleared both the phases. Unfortunately, I could not make it through psych interview, on which I regret that I should have taken your coaching session for guidance on it too. I am still aiming to join police services and would look forward to your preparation programs for further guidance." February 24, 2026

"I was unsuccessful last year with my applications, so this year I invested in myself with your help. The difference was night and day. I passed two interviews this year and the psych for both are next week. I know I will be prepared with your program. For those who are not sure, know that the true edge in Gillian's program is her coaching. Without her help, I'd still be stuck. Thank you Gillian, I'm forever grateful you do this." February 17 2026

"I took your program for CBSA and I'm now at YVR now. I'm recommending you to my friends for sure." February 12, 2026

"Hi Gillian, I just wanted to say thanks for all the help. I was successful in the final stage, and I’ve accepted a conditional offer from the OPP. Thanks again" February 8, 2026

"Hi Gillian, I'm happy to share that I cleared the 911 interview. I also received the email from CBSA regarding the psych. Thank you!!" February 6, 2026

"I wanted to update you on my progress. I passed the CBSA interview on the first try. They said they were impressed by my OTEE results as well. They told me I'm onto the next stage now, so I'm going to use my coaching for the psych prep next. Thank you for everything!" January 18, 2026

"Yes, I passed the OPP testing and psych. Everything went smoothly just like you taught it. Your program has made everything go much easier and with less stress, knowing what to expect and how to prepare. Thank you! You'll be the first to know when I get the job offer!" January 6th, 2026

"I had my OACP certificate from BEFORE finding you and OPP didn't accept my SIGMA score, so I had to rewrite my SIGMA with them. Using your program, I was able to score high on the testing with them and proceed through thanks to you (I had already passed the interview). I wish more people knew about the fact that you have to score well on the OACP testing, not just write it. I would have taken it more seriously the first time through." January 3, 2026.

"I wish I had found you earlier. The coaching was invaluable and I performed very well on the interview and next is the psych." December 15, 2025

"Hi Gillian, Hope you're doing well. I wanted to share the good news with you. I just got the email today. I passed the CBSA OTEE. It's all thanks to your program and preparation videos that I was able to do so. There's a video where the message is not about luck, it's about having the right preparation. I felt that I was prepared for the test, none of the questions were new or intimidating. I'm so glad I found your website and started preparing for the test. I will purchase the interview and psych program next so I can deliver my best during the interview. I really appreciate your program. Thank you so much again! " November 18, 2025

"Gillian: I would like to thank you for all of your help and excellent materials that you provided throughout my police journey to success. I am now hired and at OPC." November 14, 2025

Client reached out to update me on her success with a major service. She is in the final security stage. She used all of our services, including coaching and the process was smooth from start to finish. She used our testing preparation, interview and psych preparation, and private coaching for the latter two. Congratulations! October 9, 2025

This career path tends to attract strong-willed, high-energy individuals — and rightly so. The best officers are decisive, confident, and unafraid to speak up.

But those same traits can backfire in the prep stage, especially when they show up as defensiveness, inflexibility, or a belief that the rules should bend for them. Being opinionated is not a flaw — unless it gets in the way of growth.

This is why I'm sharing this blog post, Police Coaching Case Study: Confidence Isn't Enough, to help clients understand what's really needed to succeed.

In situations like this, I often find myself saying:

“Sometimes when we’re sabotaging our prep, it’s not laziness — it’s doubt. Are you sure this is what you really want?”

That question usually lands. Not always immediately. But often enough.

A frank discussion around what might be holding them back is often enough to shift the conversation effectively and get the client back on track.

The strongest candidates aren’t always the most vocal.
They’re coachable. Curious. Willing to be uncomfortable.
They prepare because they respect the process — not because someone told them to.

The truth is, most candidates who begin with resistance eventually face their own patterns — and when they do, they change. They show up differently. They prepare fully. And many of them do go on to succeed — not because they were perfect, but because they were willing to grow. One of the primary traits police services are looking for is coachability.

If you’re serious about pursuing this path, show it.
Not with big talk — but with steady preparation.
