Police Interviews in Canada

Are you considering a policing career in Canada? Passing your interviews is a crucial step in the selection process for police candidates. Police interviews are quite different from regular job interviews. Please don't underestimate the process. At Cognitive Results, we guide you through the preparation journey, ensuring you have the knowledge and support you need to succeed. Read on to learn about some of the different police interviews in Canada, including RCMP, Ontario Police, Vancouver Police, and CBSA with Cognitive Results.

The RCMP interview process involves several steps:

  • Preliminary Screening: Candidates submit an application and complete an online entrance exam.
  • Regular Member Selection Interview (RMSI): A behavioural and situational interview conducted by a recruiting officer. It assesses problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills, communication, leadership, and flexibility/adaptability.
  • Polygraph Examination: Candidates undergo a polygraph test to verify the truthfulness of their application and interview responses.

The Ontario Police interview process includes the following steps:

  • OACP Certificate: Candidates must obtain an Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) certificate, involving written tests, physical tests, and vision and hearing assessments.
  • Essential Competency Interview (ECI): A structured interview assessing analytical thinking, self-confidence, communication, flexibility, relationship building, and valuing diversity.
  • Blended Interview: An interview which is unique to the police service that incorporates the ECI and LFI, as well as values-based behavioural and situational questions. This may replace the ECI and LFI, or the LFI may be held separately.
  • Local Focus Interview (LFI): Focuses on the candidate's knowledge of and connection to the community they wish to serve. It includes questions about community involvement, understanding local issues, and commitment to the community.

The VPD interview process involves these steps:

  • Initial Application and Screening: Candidates apply online and go through an initial screening process.
  • VPD Entrance Exam: Candidates must pass the entrance exam, which assesses various skills and knowledge areas relevant to policing.
  • Panel Interview: Conducted by a panel of VPD officers, it evaluates decision-making and problem-solving, integrity and ethics, communication skills, and community focus.
  • Behavioural Interview: A structured interview focusing on past experiences and behaviours that demonstrate the candidate's suitability for police work. Key areas assessed include adaptability and stress tolerance, teamwork and collaboration, and conflict resolution.

The CBSA interview process includes:

  • Officer Trainee Entrance Exam (OTEE): Candidates must pass the OTEE before proceeding to the interview stage.
  • Structured Interview: Assesses competencies relevant to border services, such as integrity and accountability, judgment and decision-making, interpersonal skills, and dealing with difficult situations.
  • Security Clearance: Candidates undergo a thorough security clearance process, including background checks and possibly a polygraph test.

"Hi Gillian, I just wanted to say thanks for all the help. I was successful in the final stage, and I’ve accepted a conditional offer from the OPP. Thanks again" February 8, 2026

"Hi Gillian, I'm happy to share that I cleared the 911 interview. I also received the email from CBSA regarding the psych. Thank you!!" February 6, 2026

"I wanted to update you on my progress. I passed the CBSA interview on the first try. They said they were impressed by my OTEE results as well. They told me I'm onto the next stage now, so I'm going to use my coaching for the psych prep next. Thank you for everything!" January 18, 2026

"Yes, I passed the OPP testing and psych. Everything went smoothly just like you taught it. Your program has made everything go much easier and with less stress, knowing what to expect and how to prepare. Thank you! You'll be the first to know when I get the job offer!" January 6th, 2026

"I had my OACP certificate from BEFORE finding you and OPP didn't accept my SIGMA score, so I had to rewrite my SIGMA with them. Using your program, I was able to score high on the testing with them and proceed through thanks to you (I had already passed the interview). I wish more people knew about the fact that you have to score well on the OACP testing, not just write it. I would have taken it more seriously the first time through." January 3, 2026.

"I wish I had found you earlier. The coaching was invaluable and I performed very well on the interview and next is the psych." December 15, 2025

"Hi Gillian, Hope you're doing well. I wanted to share the good news with you. I just got the email today. I passed the CBSA OTEE. It's all thanks to your program and preparation videos that I was able to do so. There's a video where the message is not about luck, it's about having the right preparation. I felt that I was prepared for the test, none of the questions were new or intimidating. I'm so glad I found your website and started preparing for the test. I will purchase the interview and psych program next so I can deliver my best during the interview. I really appreciate your program. Thank you so much again! " November 18, 2025

"Gillian: I would like to thank you for all of your help and excellent materials that you provided throughout my police journey to success. I am now hired and at OPC." November 14, 2025
